Your Questions Answered
Why can't I just charge at public charging hubs?
+

You absolutely can but there are many advantages to home charging compared to the public alternative.

  • Price: You can save up to 80% on your charging costs compared to public rapid charging. Find out more using our Cost to Charge Tool.
  • Flexibility: With smarter vehicles and chargers, you can schedule your charging routine around both your lifestyle and your electricity tariff, so you get the best of both worlds.
  • Reliability: With your own private charger, you're guaranteed a spot whenever you need it. No more waiting around for chargers to open up.
My vehicle comes with a 3-pin cable, why can't I use that?
+

You can, but 3-pin charging is by far the slowest way to charge your vehicle, in fact, it can take over 18 hours to fully charge your vehicle using a 3-pin cable which provides approximately 2.4kW of power. Home chargers however, delivers 7.4kW of power to your vehicle, dramatically reducing your charging time. In fact, home chargers are over three times faster. This means that a single overnight charge would be enough to fully restore the range of your vehicle.

In addition, home chargers offer a range of safety and quality of life features that you won't get with 3-pin chargers. These include:

  • A range of electrical safety features including surge protection and an isolation switch.
  • The ability to lock your charger as well as your vehicle, reducing the risk of theft or tampering.
  • Smart scheduling. Various chargers can work with your electricity supplier to ensure that your vehicle only charges during the cheapest times of the day.
  • Power usage data. Like your smart meter, your home charger can tell you clearly how much power you are using on vehicle charging and in many cases, how much this is costing you.
  • Solar and battery integration. If your home benefits from solar panels and battery storage, we offer chargers that can integrate with these assets to make the most out of your renewable array.
Will smart charging work with my vehicle?
+

Yes. Our range of home chargers are designed to work with all of the electric vehicles currently available. Some chargers work better with certain cars, so you can use our helpful vehicle database to match your car with the best charger.

Can I install my own charger?
+

Only a qualified electrician can carry out a home charger installation. This is due to the legal requirements about how a home charger must be installed and the requirement for a competent person to carry out the installation to reduce the risk of fire and electric shock.

Can I just buy a charger separately and arrange installation myself?
+

Yes! Each of our charger product pages features Charger Only option which you can use to just purchase a charger for us without the installation service.

I've purchased a charger elsewhere, can you install it?
+

In some limited cases we are able to do this, however this is arranged on a case-by-case basis due to our warranty and quality obligations. To find out more, contact support@smarthomecharge.co.uk to speak to our team.

I don't have a driveway, can I still have a home charger?
+

Yes! If you have nearby on-street parking then there are options that will allow you to charge your car from the street.

I don't own my own home, can I have a home charger?
+

Yes! So long as you have the permission of the property owner, we can carry out the install.
