How Much Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Car?
A home EV charger can help dramatically reduce the cost to charge an electric car. This is because smart home EV chargers give you the ability to schedule a charge when the electricity price is cheaper.
What do we mean by cheaper electricity price? EV drivers are able to access EV friendly tariffs, which offer much lower prices (usually overnight) helping to reduce charging costs. In fact, you could recoup the cost of home charger installation in around 18 months with the savings alone.
Discover how much it will cost to charge an electric vehicle with our handy Cost to Charge tool. You'll even get £50 towards your first energy bill when you sign up to particular tariffs!

FAQs
What is a tethered electric vehicle charger?
A tethered EV charger is a charging unit that comes with a fixed cable permanently attached to the unit. This means you don’t need to use a separate charging cable each time you charge your EV—simply plug the connector directly into your vehicle. In most cases, the cable supplied with a tethered unit is five meters long, with the option to upgrade to a longer length for an additional cost.
What's the difference between tethered and untethered EV chargers?
Simply put, a tethered charger comes with a permanently attached charging cable, whereas untethered charging units do not.
Untethered EV chargers use a separately supplied cable (such as the one that comes with your vehicle) and require you to plug in both ends of the cable - one into the charger and the other into the car.
What are the benefits of a tethered electric vehicle charger?
- Convenience: No need to retrieve and connect your own charging cable each time you charge.
- Faster setup: Just plug in and start charging without extra steps.
- Reduced wear on cables: Less frequent handling of cables can extend their lifespan.
- Security: The attached cable is always available and cannot be misplaced.
However, a tethered charger is limited to the connector type it comes with (typically Type 2 in the UK), meaning it may not be compatible with all EVs. If you need flexibility for different vehicle types or prefer a cleaner look when not in use, an untethered charger might be a better option.
Can I buy a Type 1 tethered EV charger?
Yes, you can, but we do not sell them as all modern EVs now use Type 2 connectors.
If you're considering purchasing a tethered Type 1 EV charger, we recommend opting for an untethered charger instead, as these are backward-compatible.
Can I upgrade the charging cable on a tethered charger?
Most tethered charge points don't allow you to change the cable. However, the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is one such charge point which can have its tethered cable changed.
In all other cases, changing the cable on a tethered charge point will likely void the warranty, so we strongly advise against it.
Before purchasing a tethered EV charger, we recommend measuring the distance between where you plan to install the charger and where you park to ensure the cable length is sufficient before placing your order.
