FAQs
Can any property have a 22kW EV charger?
No.
Before you can have a 22kW charger at home, you must first have a three-phase power supply.
Most residential properties in the UK however use a single-phase power supply meaning that you will need to have your power supply upgraded if yours is one of them.
To do this, you will need to apply for an upgrade with your DNO for which it will quote for.
What is a three-phase power supply?
A three-phase power supply (also known as a three-phase electricity supply, three-phase electrical supply or simply a three-phase supply) is a power supply that typically uses three 100-amp fuses instead of one. You can find out if your power supply is three phase by counting the number of fuses going into the electricity meter.
How much does it cost to install a 22kW EV charger
How much it costs to install a 22kW EV home charger depends on your property and which charger you choose.
Typically, 22kW EV chargers are more expensive than 7kW chargers due to the extra components needed to handle the extra current.
To add to this, if your home uses a single-phase supply (like most homes in the UK) then you'll need to upgrade it to a three-phase electricity supply, which can range from £3,000 to £15,000.
You can learn more in our 22kW EV charging guide.
How quickly can you install my EV charger?
Typical lead times from point of payment are 1-4 weeks. Lead times will vary from region to region and, of course, how busy we are in your area at the time.
While there are some elements out of our control, such as the DNO Notification, which can delay your installation, you can help speed up the process by:
Completing your home charging survey quickly
Most of our customers get an Instant Quote without needing to do the Online Site Survey first, but you’ll need to do one before your installation can be booked so we can gather some crucial information and confirm any other requirements. The sooner you complete your survey, the better!

What's the difference between three-phase charging and single-phase charging?
Three-phase chargers (or 22kW chargers) are able to achieve a charging rate of up to 22kW, whereas a single-phase charger can achieve a max charging rate of 7.4kW.
Even if your property has three-phase and you have a 22kW three-phase charger installed, many EVs have a max rate they can charge at. For example, some vehicles are capped to charge at 11kW AC at home which may mean a three-phase charger is not worth the cost or effort.
Can any EV use a 22kW three-phase EV charger?
Yes! As long as you have a compatible cable type, any EV can use a 22kW charger.
Whether your EV can receive the full 22kW power output of a 22kW three phase charger however depends the make and model, as most electric cars have a max rate they can charge at when it comes to home EV charging.
You can find out the max charging speed of your EV as well as the different speeds it can charge at with our EV database.
How fast can a 22kW EV charger charge an EV?
A 22kW three phase EV charger will typically add around 90 miles of charge per hour to a compatible EV, which is around three times faster than 7.4kW single phase EV charger (which typically add 30 miles of range per hour of charge).
You can find out the exact charging time of your EV and if it's 22kW EV charging compatible by searching for it in our EV database.
Which cables are compatible with 22kW EV chargers?
When buying a cable for a 22 kW home ev charger, look out for the terms three-phase or 22kW compatible in the description.
Also, only Type 2 charging cables can carry 22kW charging speeds.
Can I use a 7kW cable on a 22 kW ev charger?
Yes, you can use a 7kW cable on a 22kW charger.
You will however be limited to the cable's max charging speed of 7kW.
Is a 22kW EV Charger worth it?
Whether a 22 kW car charger is worth the extra work and money depends on your circumstances. You can learn more about 22kW EV chargers on our dedicated guide.
Aside from the faster charging speeds, 22kW three-phase EV chargers are good for drivers with multiple electric cars who want to reduce their charging time.
Are there both untethered and tethered 22kW EV chargers?
Yes, like single-phase chargers (EV chargers that have a max limit charging limit of 7.4kW), three-phase chargers (chargers that have a max limit of 22kW) can come in both tethered and untethered varieties.
The untethered 22kW EV chargers (chargers that feature a universal socket where your own cable can be inserted) that we currently sell is the 22kW version of the Simpson and Partners Home and the Easee Charge.
The tethered 22kW EV chargers (chargers that come with a permanently attached cable) we currently sell are the Tesla Wall Connector and the Andersen A2.
Why are 22kW three phase chargers more common in commercial properties than residential properties?
Commercial properties are more likely to have a three phase electrical supply than a residential property.
