How Much Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Car?
A home EV charger can help dramatically reduce the cost to charge an electric car. This is because smart home EV chargers give you the ability to schedule a charge when the electricity price is cheaper.
What do we mean by cheaper electricity price? EV drivers are able to access EV friendly tariffs, which offer much lower prices (usually overnight) helping to reduce charging costs. In fact, you could recoup the cost of home charger installation in around 18 months with the savings alone.

What's the difference between tethered and untethered chargers?
Untethered chargers have a universal socket where drivers can insert their own charging cable. Tethered chargers, on the other hand, come with a permanently attached charging cable.
The charging connection on an untethered EV charger is compatible with any electric vehicle, whereas modern tethered chargers are only compatible with cars that have a type 2 connector.
For more details, check out our in-depth article on the differences between untethered and tethered chargers.
What is an untethered home electric car charger?
A tethered EV charge point has a fixed cable attached to the unit itself, whereas an untethered EV charger is a charge point without a permanently attached cable. Instead, it features a universal socket that allows you to use any EV charging cable.
In other words, untethered chargers use detachable cables that can be stored conveniently in your car boot. However, these cables are typically sold separately and are not supplied with the EV charge point.
What are the benefits of an untethered electric car charger?
The main benefits of an untethered electric car charger are:
Flexible cable length options
Unlike tethered EV chargers, untethered chargers are not restricted to a fixed cable length. This allows you to choose a cable length that suits your needs. However, you will need to use the cable provided with your vehicle or purchase a different length separately.
Compatibility with both Type 1 and Type 2 vehicles
The plug that connects to the vehicle can differ between "Type 1" and "Type 2" (with most modern EVs now using Type 2). However, the end of the cable that connects to the charging unit is the same for both types.
This means an untethered EV charger can charge any electric vehicle, as it accommodates any EV charging cable.
Compact design
Untethered chargers often have a more compact design because they don’t include a permanently attached cable. This makes them an ideal choice for people with limited wall space.
Can you leave a cable plugged into untethered charging units?
Yes, you can leave a cable plugged into an untethered charger. However, we recommend against doing so as a theft deterrent.
Some chargers, such as the Easee One or the Simpson & Partners Home 7 Series, offer the option to lock the cable in place for added security.
Can I get an untethered 22kW three-phase EV charger?
Yes, untethered 22kW EV chargers are available.
However, you will need to purchase a three-phase 22kW charging cable or already have one to charge at the full 22kW speed.
The only untethered EV charger we sell that is compatible with three-phase charging is the Easee Charge.

Do untethered chargers come with a charging cable?
Typically, no. Charging cables are sold separately but can be added to your quote during the checkout process.
Most EVs also include a charging cable, which can be used with an untethered EV charge point to charge your vehicle.
Can I buy a cable with my untethered EV charger?
Yes, you can. EV cables can be added to your quote at checkout or purchased separately from our accessories page.
