Get to know your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i charger

We've created this page to help you understand your EV charger so you can get the most out of it and deal with any potential hiccups along the way. Get started with these key features for your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i.

Downloading the EV.Energy app

+

Rather than having it's own app, the waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i uses the EV.Energy app to control and monitor charging schedules.

You can download the EV.Energy app here:

How do I claim rewards for charging?

+

For every smart charge session of 7kWh or more, you will earn a point. These points can then be spent on rewards such as Amazon vouchers, carbon off-setting and energy bills discounts. For more information about EV.Energy's reward scheme, be sure to check out the rewards section of their website.

Setting up a schedule

+

By default, the waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i is set to fully charge a connected vehicle by 7:00am via the EV.energy app. This can be overridden by setting up a weekly schedule or one-off "override" in the EV.Energy app.

Setting up a schedule

If you want to permanently change the 7:00am ready by time, you can do this by setting a weekly schedule:

  1. Go to the Smart section in the EV.Energy app
  2. Under Smart Schedule, tap "Full schedule"
  3. Tap "Add new time"
  4. Select the days that you want to include in the new schedule and the preferred ready-by time
  5. Tap "Add"

Setting up a one-off schedule

If you want to override the default 7:00am ready time or your own weekly set charge schedule on a one-off basis, you will need to:

  1. Go to the smart section in the EV energy app
  2. Under smart schedule, tap "Full Schedule"
  3. Under "Override Schedule" tap "Edit"
  4. Set the time that you want your EV to be fully charged by
  5. Tap "Set time"

Starting a "Boost Charge"

+

If you want to override any charging schedules and charge a connected electric vehicle immediately, you can do so by tapping the "Boost" button on the main screen of the EV.Energy app. Please be aware that you will not be able to earn any reward points when using Boost mode.

What do the different coloured lights mean?

+

You can check the status of your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i from the dashboard of the EV.Energy app. If you don't have your phone to hand or you're right in front of the charger however, you can check the status light directly from the charger.

Solid Blue: Your charging point is in standby mode.

Solid Green: The waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i is preparing to charge a connected vehicle.

Flashing Green: Your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i is currently charging a connected vehicle.

Solid Red: A fault has been detected. If your charger continues to show this light even after turning it off and on at the fuse switch, please contact support.

waEV-Charge EV charger not working? Check these steps first!

Most EV chargers are very reliable and should charge your vehicle as intended. However, there are lots of variables with EV charging that can occasionally interrupt this process. Make sure you've checked the below before moving on to the advanced troubleshooting steps further down the page, as there could be a simple solution to the problem.

Is the cable plugged in correctly?

+

As part of a safety and security mechanism, vehicles will often lock a plugged-in cable into place during a charge session in order to prevent forced unplugging.

If the waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i cable is not properly inserted into your vehicle, the locking mechanism in the vehicle's charging port might not lock onto the cable properly and therefore prevent any charge coming from the EV1/EV1i going into your vehicle.

If you think this might have happened to you, we advise that you unplug the cable from your vehicle and plug it back in again, then hold it in place until you hear the locking mechanism on your vehicle grab the charging cable.

What charging rate can your vehicle accept?

+

Most vehicles can accept an AC charge rate of up to 7.4kW using a single phase charger. Some older vehicles, such as the first Nissan Leaf, charge at a much slower rate however. This means that no matter what charge speed your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i outputs, your vehicle will limit the speed to its max output.

You can check your vehicle's charge speed by finding it on the vehicle page section of our website (it will be listed under charging time). You should also be able to find your vehicle's max charge speed in its manual.

Check the vehicle's onboard charging settings

+

If you know that your vehicle can accept the max charge speed outputted by your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i but your vehicle is still charging at a slower rate then the next thing to check is if your vehicle isn't deliberately limiting the charge rate due to a setting.

Some vehicles have the ability to adjust the charge speed manually which when set will limit the charge rate that your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i outputs to your vehicle. We recommend that you check your vehicle's settings to make sure that the limiter is either off or set to the max output of your waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i (7.4kW).

Is your vehicle's settings clashing with your charger app schedule?

+

If you are finding that your vehicle hasn't charged fully or at all after a charge schedule, it could be due to the vehicle itself. Some vehicles have built-in charge scheduling features which can interfere with the waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i own charge scheduling. Every vehicle is different, so we advise checking the manual that came with your vehicle if you are unsure how to turn off or modify its charge scheduling.

Has the charger tripped at the consumer unit?

+

It's rare, but an EV charger may trip at the consumer unit if it detects a fault. This is a safety feature, but simply switching the car charger back on at the consumer unit should get you up and running again.

If it keeps recurring then please contact our support team.

Hardware reset the waEV-Charge EV1

+

It’s a cliché, but it genuinely can work. Sometimes the waEV-Charge EV1/EV1i just needs a good old fashioned reset.

  1. Locate the dedicated circuit breaker (see photos below). This should be where your installer connected the charger’s cabling to your mains supply.
  2. Switch it off and leave for 10 seconds.
  3. Now switch back on again

Have you tried this?

+

Update the app

Most phones nowadays will automatically keep installed apps up to date, but it’s always good practice to make sure that it is.

To do this you’ll first need to go into the app store on the iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android. Navigate to your installed apps and you should see a list of which apps are up to date and which ones aren’t. If the EV.Energy app is showing that there’s an update available, tap “update”.
