The Volvo XC40 plug-in hybrid is a no-brainer for the Swedish manufacturer. The XC40 has been fantastically popular so it makes sense to offer a plug-in hybrid variant as well as the full electric XC40 Recharge.
The XC40 PHEV managed a (Volvo claimed) 141mpg and a pure electric range of about 28 miles. Granted, you may not actually achieve 141mpg, but if you make the most of the electric-only mode for your commute or driving about town, you may very rarely be spotted at the petrol station.
The SUV produces 258hp and will do 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds. Not the fastest, but then the XC40 isn’t about speed – it’s about being a gorgeous-look-at, practical family car.
There are four trim levels including the R-Design and R-Design Pro (starting from £30,000), plus the Inscription and Inscription Pro variants.
Using a three-pin plug, the XC40 will fully charge between 3.5 and 6.5 hours, while a dedicated home charger knocks this down to around two-and-a-half hours.
