VolkswagenPassat GTE (2018) electric chargers
8 kWh battery
Vehicle type Plug-in hybrid
Connector type 2
Range 20 miles of electric driving
Charge speed 9 miles per hour
It’s easy to assume the GTE badging means this Passat PHEV is designed to be sporty, but though its acceleration and performance are good by any standards (0-62 in 7.4 seconds and 145 mph top speed) it’s clearly not marketed as anything other than a refined family saloon with a great petrol and electric powertrain. As on the Golf GTE, emissions are low (39g/km of CO2), which comes as no surprise since it uses the same turbo 1.4-litre 154bhp TSI petrol engine and 113bhp electric motor (and are also to be found in the Audi A3 Sportback e-Tron). Battery-only range is a useful 31 miles. Full charging can be achieved via a 3.6kw wall-box in 2.5 hours. We like the way the optional adaptive digital instruments change to suit the different driving modes.
