The wait is over. It feels like an age since Volkswagen teased us with the prospect of its first “from-the-ground-up” all-electric car.
Expected in 2020, the verdict on how the Volkswagen ID.3 will drive is still to come in. But, let’s face it, this is Volkswagen – it’s not going to be a bad drive. VW is positioning, and indeed expecting, this car to be as revolutionary as the Golf was when it launched in the 70s.
The ID.3 Mid Range has a 58kWh battery and will give you 261 miles of range (WLTP) – slightly more than the ID.3 Standard Range and more than plenty to cover the daily commute, which is less than 30km on average across Europe.
The Mid Range also gets a performance boost, accelerating from 0-62mph in seven seconds. The instant response an electric motor offers will make it feel even faster, so the ID.3 shouldn’t be lacking in the fun department.
The family hatchback makes use of a Type 2 connection for home charging and a CCS fastcharge port for rapid charging on the road. At home, the Mid Range Volkswagen ID.3 can charge up to 11kW AC and will take around six hours to fully charge from empty at this speed. Although, this will require a three-phase supply, so most home owners will need to settle for 7.4kW – even so, the Mid Range will charge in just nine hours.
On the road, the ID.3 Mid Range can make use of 100kW rapid chargers which means the time to charge from 10% to 80% is as little as 30 minutes.
