Toyota has revived its well-established Prius with much improved looks, aerodynamic efficiency and power. The extra streamlining has created a low drag factor of just 0.25, which helps preserve power. An 8.8kwh battery under the boot floor is twice as powerful as the previous model’s, but only 50% heavier, while only taking up two-thirds more space. As in the original, two electric motors and a petrol engine are coupled to a constant velocity (CVT) transmission. Power is not huge, totalling 120bhp, and the 0-62mph time is not that amazing (11.1 seconds) but that isn’t the point about the Prius. It’s now a terrifically efficient, nice to drive PHEV, which cruises happily at motorway speeds, but is equally at home in town. Official all-electric range is 39 miles. Toyota’s long-term experience with hybrid vehicles make this a terrific choice for many.
