Smart, with its reputation for creating compact city vehicles, has always been something of a pioneer – so it’s no surprise to see it offering well-sorted EVs. The Smart Forfour EQ is the top of the range with an 80 bhp electric motor, deriving power from a 17.6kwh battery, providing effortless performance and an adequate 12.7 seconds 0-62 mph time (though in common with many electric cars, it feels quicker than this due to the EQ’s instant response). The range is claimed to be 99 miles but in practice on a mixture of road types you may find this optimistic (because on motorways for instance, much of the regenerative braking element encountered in town driving is missing). Very much a competitor of Renault’s Zoe and Volkswagen’s e-Up! In tight spaces the EQ’s small turning circle and light-touch steering score highly.
