The Car

The Mercedes E300e replaces the previous E350e, but don’t worry it’s every bit as luxurious, powerful and efficient (in pure electric mode, anyway) as its predecessor.

A car this size, power and looks is decidedly aimed at the company car market, particularly as BIK rate falls down to just 12% from April 2020.

The vehicle is actually also available as a diesel plug-in hybrid, so the choice of engine/fuel type ultimately comes down to what you’re using it for. If you’re doing longer journey for work during the week, for example, but shorter trips to town and with the family at weekends then the diesel plug-in hybrid E300de may well be better suited.

But if you’re journeys consist of short trips and medium commutes/work trips (less than 60 miles a day), then we’d plump for the petrol plug-in hybrid. Besides, the regenerative braking which recoups energy back into the battery and the clever engine management system that cuts in and out as needed means your fuel economy will be close to that of a regular diesel.

Together the petrol engine and electric motor provide 700Nm of torque and just 46g of CO2 per kilometre. In addition, the pure electric mode offers around 30 miles of zero-emissions driving providing extra smooth, quiet and clean travel in urban areas or for shorter journeys.

Expect charging to take around 1.5 hours using a dedicated home charge points.

Charging at home

You can find full details of how long it takes to charge this vehicle from empty to full using a 7.4kW home charge point at the bottom of this page.

However, it's important to note that most electric car charging is done overnight when you're asleep (so you wake up to a charged vehicle) and it's very unlikely you will ever need to charge the battery from completely empty to completely full. So, in reality, most drivers will only need to "top up" their car's battery overnight - for example, from 50% to 80%.

We tested how often the average driver would need to charge each week using the Jaguar GO I-PACE app. See how we got on in this video.
