The London TX Electric Taxi has quickly become a common and beloved sight on the streets of our capital. Now the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) is bringing the successful formula to the light commercial van sector.
Just like its black cab brothers and sisters, the LEVC electric van is battery electric vehicle with a petrol range extender. The vehicle is driven by electric motors and is capable of about 80 miles zero-emission pure electric driving.
This is a sizeable amount given the shorter distances and stop start nature of the vehicles this van wants to replace – think couriers, parcel deliveries, post, city-based tradespeople.
Recharging the 31kWh battery is easy thanks to a Type 2 connection and rapid charging capability. But if that wasn’t enough, the LEVC LCV has a small petrol generator which can power the battery and electric motors. This takes the overall range of the electric van up to an impressive 377 miles (NEDC).
It isn’t just the impressive range, turning circle, low running costs and purpose-built nature of the LEVC electric van that is turning heads, but the cargo area which is capable of carrying two Euro pallets and a gross vehicle weight of 2.9 tonnes. Access to the 5.13 area space is easy thanks to the sliding side door and split rear doors.
The LEVC electric van is expected to hit our roads in late 2020.
Charging at home
You can find full details of how long it takes to charge this vehicle from empty to full using a 7.4kW home charge point at the bottom of this page.
However, it's important to note that most electric car charging is done overnight when you're asleep (so you wake up to a charged vehicle) and it's very unlikely you will ever need to charge the battery from completely empty to completely full. So, in reality, most drivers will only need to "top up" their car's battery overnight - for example, from 50% to 80%.
We tested how often the average driver would need to charge each week using the Jaguar GO I-PACE app. See how we got on in this video.
