Here is Audi’s long-awaited all-electric SUV, competing in the marketplace with cars like Tesla’s Model X and the Jaguar I-PACE. Audi claims the e-tron 55 Quattro offers the same amount of interior space as the Q7, while mechanically it shares the same platform as the Q5 (which is why it looks so similar in many respects). But it’s the nifty electric drivetrain which sets this apart. There are two “asynchronous“ motors – one at the front providing 181bhp and another at the rear kicking out 221bhp - both linked by a clever electronic control system, offering sophisticated four-wheel-drive. There’s a total of 402bhp on tap with a useful 487lb/ft of torque (though you’ll only be able to benefit from all this in Boost mode). 0-62 time is 5.7 seconds and top speed is a limited 124mph. It’s noteworthy that the liquid-cooled battery on its own weighs 700kg – quite a chunk of the total kerbside weight - but then you need a lot of power for a beefy twin-motor system like this. Rapid charging is achievable in just 30 minutes using a 150kW charger, or a home fast 7.4kW charger will charge the battery from completely empty in 13 hours 30 minutes.
