This is the PHEV version of the Audi A3 Sportback family car, only with a company car tax-friendly petrol-electric power combination. Performance is brisk (0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds). Audi claims a fuel economy figure of 176.6mpg, but this is using battery power in the mix and once the battery has run down (after about 20 miles) the 1.4-litre petrol engine takes over completely. In real world terms this equates to fuel consumption falling back to something like 45-48 mpg. Three driving modes are available – EV, Hybrid and Battery Hold. As you’d expect the former locks the A3 e-tron into electric-only mode, while Battery Hold (as you might have worked out by now) does the opposite. The A3 features a well-appointed cabin with plenty of room for four adults.
