MG4 Charging Guide

The MG4 EV is an affordable electric hatchback that offers strong value, practical range and rapid charging capability for everyday UK driving.
It uses a Type 2 connection for AC home and destination charging, and CCS for DC rapid charging. In the UK, the MG4 EV Long Range is a key version to reference, with a 64kWh total battery capacity, 61.7kWh usable battery capacity and a maximum AC charging rate of 6.6kW.
MG4 EV Charging Specifications
Model variant | Battery capacity | Charging port type | AC Home Charging / Destination Charging Speed | DC Rapid Charging Speed (Public Charging) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
61.7kWh usable | Type 2 / CCS | Up to 6.6kW AC | Up to approx 142kW DC |
Please note that specifications may vary slightly depending on model year and market specification.
Other MG4 versions, including Standard Range, Extended Range and XPower models, may have different battery sizes and charging speeds.
Charging the MG4 EV at Home

Charging the MG4 EV at home is simple with a dedicated wallbox. The MG4 EV Long Range has a 6.6kW onboard AC charger, so it will not take the full output from some 7.4kW home charge points, but it will still charge easily overnight from a low battery.
A standard three-pin plug can be used if necessary, but it is much slower and is best treated as an emergency or occasional charging option.
Charging Times at Home
Charger Power | Model Variant | Estimated Charge Time |
|---|---|---|
2.3kW (3-pin socket) | MG4 EV Long Range | Approximately 32 hours |
7kW Home Charger | MG4 EV Long Range | Approximately 11 hours |
11kW AC Charger | MG4 EV Long Range | Approximately 11 hours |
MG4 EV Smart Charging Features

The MG4 EV supports useful charging features designed to make everyday electric driving easier. Depending on model year and specification, features may include scheduled charging, remote charging information through MG’s connected services and battery management settings.
Selected MG4 models also support Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing the car to power external electrical devices when using the correct adapter and within the vehicle’s output limits.
How Much Does It Cost to Charge an MG4 EV at Home?

Using a typical UK electricity tariff of 26.35p/kWh:
Model Variant | Estimated Charging Cost per Single Charge (0–100%) |
|---|---|
MG4 EV Long Range | Approximately £16.26 |
This is based on a 61.7kWh usable battery multiplied by 26.35p/kWh. Actual cost will vary depending on tariff, charging losses and whether an off-peak EV tariff is used.
Public Charging for the MG4 EV

The MG4 EV uses CCS for DC rapid charging, so it can use the majority of UK rapid and ultra-rapid public charging points. The MG4 EV Long Range can rapid charge at up to around 142kW, with a 10-80% charge taking approximately 30 minutes on a sufficiently powerful charger.
Rapid charging is most useful on longer journeys, while AC destination charging is better suited to parking for several hours at hotels, workplaces, shopping centres or town-centre chargers.
MG4 EV Public Charging Times
Model Variant | Charger Type | Charging Speed |
|---|---|---|
MG4 EV Long Range | 50kW DC Rapid Charger | 10–80% in approximately 52 minutes |
MG4 EV Long Range | 150kW DC Rapid Charger | 10–80% in approximately 30 minutes |
