The Kia Niro EV is a practical all-electric crossover with a 64.8kWh usable battery, front-mounted charging port and a combined Type 2 / CCS charging connection. For UK drivers, it is well suited to home charging, regular commuting and longer journeys using public rapid chargers.

The current-generation Kia Niro EV was sold in the UK with a 64.8kWh lithium-ion battery and an official WLTP range of up to 285 miles, depending on specification and conditions. Kia states that, using a suitable DC fast charger, the Niro EV can charge from 10-80% in as little as 43 minutes.

Charging the Kia Niro EV at Home

Charging at home is usually the most convenient and cost-effective way to run a Kia Niro EV. Most UK home charge points are rated at 7.4kW, which is enough to fully charge the Niro EV overnight from a low battery.

The Niro EV can accept up to 11kW AC charging, although this requires a compatible three-phase supply, which is uncommon in many UK homes. On a typical single-phase 7.4kW wallbox, a full 0-100% charge will take around 10 hours 30 minutes according to EV Database estimates. A standard three-pin domestic plug is much slower and is best reserved for occasional or emergency use.

The Kia Niro EV includes a number of useful charging-related features designed to make electric driving easier. Kia Connect services allow drivers to access connected functions, while the car also supports scheduled charging so owners can take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs where available.

Selected Niro EV grades also include Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing the car to power external electrical devices. Kia describes this as a portable energy feature that can be used for items such as laptops, e-bikes or small appliances, depending on output and equipment compatibility.

Public Charging for the Kia Niro EV

For longer trips, the Kia Niro EV can use public AC destination chargers and DC rapid chargers. DC rapid charging is better suited to motorway stops and longer journeys, where the quickest charging window is usually from around 10-80%.

The Niro EV uses the CCS standard for DC rapid charging. Charging speed will slow as the battery approaches 80%, so topping up to 100% on a rapid charger is usually less time-efficient.
