VW Multivan plug-in hybrid prices unleashed
Pricing for the Volkswagen Multivan has been announced, an all-new model that replaces the much-loved Caravelle that includes a plug-in hybrid version for the first time.
The Multivan eHybrid uses a 1.4-litre TSI 150PS engine with an 85kW electric motor to provide a combined output of 160kW and 218PS, which is matched to a six-speed DSG gearbox.
The electric range last for 31 miles, and a wall box will recharge the battery in 3.6 hours.
The 13kWh lithium-ion battery is kept under the flat floor in a bid to save interior space and reduce the Multivan’s centre of gravity for more a car-like feel. Based on VW’S MQB platform, it provides seven seats within its 1.9m-high and 5m-long dimensions, thought a long-wheelbase version stretches the latter to 5.2m.
Fun for all the family
The Volkswagen Multivan eHybrid has seven seats, with the rear five weighing 25 per cent less than the outgoing Caravelle. The second row can be moved around by 180 degrees for conference-style seating, while the full-width bench seat from the Caravelle has been replaced by individual seats to allow for single seats to be removed for extra storage.
There’s also a multi-function table down the central track that can be moved between any of the seating rows, including the front seats. The removable table features three cup holders and a storage bin. To keep light on it all, there’s an optional panoramic roof.
Storage-wise, there’s 469 litres of luggage capability behind the third row of seats that extends to 1844 litres behind the second row. Remove all the seats and you have 3672 litres in the short wheelbase version, up to 4053 litres in the long wheelbase Multivan with the panoramic glass roof. Three trims are available – Life, Style and Energetic.
How safe is it?
Volkswagen says there are more than 25 driver assist systems, including city emergency braking, dynamic road sign display and a lane assist system.
While the VW Multivan is fitted with LED headlights as standard, these can be upgraded to LED matrix headlights. These offer a permanent full beam without blinding oncoming drivers, and dynamic cornering for twisty roads.
If you’re towing, the maximum trailer weight is 1600kg.
How much is the Multivan eHybrid?
You’ll pay £60,865 for the 1.4 TSI eHybrid 218 PS Energetic model with long wheelbase, while the Energetic special edition starts from £59,515 and includes a Harmon Kardon sound system, privacy glass, 18” alloys, and panoramic glass roof.
