Electric SUVs, family cars, concepts and more duked it out in the 2021 TopGear.com Electric Car Awards, with the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo receiving the Best Electric Car of 2021 award.
The awards were “hosted” at Gridserve’s all-electric charging forecourt in Braintree, with the stars of the EV world on show.
The Lotus Evija grabbed the One To Watch award, with the one on display featuring a TopGear.com designed livery. The 2000hp pure electric hypercar will come with a hefty £2million price tag, but it’s easy to see why the Top Gear judges liked it so much.
Best Interior went to the upcoming Mercedes EQS, which is perhaps no surprise given the piston-powered S-Class is the go-to example for exquisite luxury interiors.
The EQS is the first purpose-built all-electric Mercedes, with its own ground-up EV platforms. Judges were impressed by the claimed range of 475 miles, as well as the striking “hyperscreen” which spans the entire dash.
The award for Best Design went to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 was praised for its unique headlights and alloy wheels, as well as the spacious cabin which owes much to the long wheelbase courtesy of Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP platform.
The Audi e-tron GT, which shares a lot of the same features and parts of the Porsche Taycan received the Best GT award. Despite the similarities to the Taycan, the Audi e-tron GT pipped it to the post thanks in part to its more laid-back driving style and handling.
The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo was handed the award for Best Estate and Best Electric Car 2021 for its spacious boot, superb styling, performance and its ability to “wang around a rally stage”… naturally.
