Tesla’s Full Self-Driving option will be made available as a monthly subscription according to CEO Elon Musk.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) is a step-up from the “Autopilot” features that come with the vehicles as standard, effectively enabling more decision-making features such as auto lane change, self parking and more.
The FSD tech is impressive and new capabilities are added regularly as the software improve. But it also comes at an extra cost – currently £5,800 in the UK – to “activate” as all Tesla vehicles already come with the necessary hardware to make FSD possible.
CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly said he believes the cost is worth it, especially if plans to allow Tesla owners to “rent out” their vehicles is ever allowed, essentially turning them into driverless taxis able to make money for their owners.
It remains to be seen if that will ever happen, so Tesla is looking at a monthly subscription option to help make the cost of FSD more manageable.
In an earnings calls Elon said: “I think we will also be having it as a subscription service, but it will be towards the end of this year.”
“It was to make available FSD as an option. In our view, buying FSD is an investment in the future and we're confident that his investment that will pay off to the consumer,” Musk continued. “My guess is the FSD option is something people will not regret doing.”
