New BMW i5 all-electric saloon to go on sale in 2023
BMW is putting its new i5 EV through its paces before production begins in readiness to go on sale in 2023.
Rumours suggest it will share the same design as the current 5 series Beemer, but it will be powered by an updated version of the iX3’s battery pack and power unit.
A source inside BMW reckons its fifth generation of electric motor will offer 282bhp, be fitted to the rear axle and receive its power from an 80kWh battery. Also, because of its more aerodynamic shape, WLTP range could reach past 300 miles. With the company using the same powertrain as the iX3 SUV, there’s little doubt that the charging system will be replicated, so expect to reach 10-80% in just 27 minutes when plugged in to a 150kW rapid charger. When connected to a home smart charger, it’ll fully charge in around 12 hours, but there’s also an on-board 11kW charger built-in as a back-up.
BMW have confirmed it plans to launch at least another 25 fully electric vehicles across its full range.
