MG has continued its momentum from 2020 into 2021 with award wins for its MG5 and ZS electric cars.
MG has become the UK’s fastest growing car brand after it had record sales in 2020. The once-ailing British carmaker has seen its fortunes turned around by Chinese owner SAIC Motor with a new focus on affordable vehicles and electric cars.
Sales were up 41% in 2020 compared to 2019, with 18,415 sales. That growth has largely been driven by MG’s surprising performance in the electric car segment, with plug-in vehicles accounting for nearly a third of all sales.
That includes sales of 5,500 MG ZS EVs which launched towards the end of 2019 and was a hit with drivers thanks to its SUV styling, low starting price and decent equipment levels.
In fact, the ZS EV has just been crowned Medium EV Car of the Year 2021 at the Company Car and Van awards. It’s the second year in a row the ZS EV has taken the title with Company Car and Van editor Andrew Walker praising its all-round offering:
“MG deservedly retains this award. Despite increased competition, the ZS EV still manages to offer a cracking level of specification, coupled to a 163-mile electric range, with plenty of room on board for a family of five, all at an incredible price.”
Not to be outdone, MG’s new electric estate has also won its first major award. The MG5 EV was voted Best Value EV by WhichEV? Because of its range, equipment and affordable price.
WhichEV? Editor James Morris said:
“The MG5 EV sets a new benchmark for EV affordability. Not only does it deliver an incredibly low price for an electric car, but it also provides a decent range, commendable performance and great practicality for passengers and cargo alike. It has a decent level of equipment and long warranty, too. This EV represents superb value for the UK market, and breaks down the barriers to electric ownership.”
