Best solar home EV chargers 2025

A solar compatible EV charger can take excess solar energy and use it to charge your electric car. But which chargers are best at it?
More households than ever are getting solar panels installed and for good reasons. They lower energy bills whilst reducing reliance on grid energy. Some households are even able to make more energy from their solar panels (also known as a solar PV system) than they use which can then either be sold back to the grid or put in a home battery storage system.
Here is our list of the Best Solar EV Chargers, but if you're not in the market for solar compatible chargers then check out our Best EV Chargers list for a broader overview.
What is a solar EV charger?

When you generate electricity with solar panels, this will be used initially for your house - powering your lights, TV, toaster, kettle etc.
If you have any solar power leftover (surplus solar) this would ordinarily be "lost", unless you have a battery storage system or an export tariff where you get paid for any solar power you send to the grid.
A solar EV charger gives you another place to send your surplus energy: directly into your electric vehicle's battery.
That means any leftover energy generated by your solar panels will charge up your EV instead - for free!
There is one small caveat to be mindful of, however. The minimum power required to charge an electric car is 1.44kW, so this is the amount your solar panels will need generate in order to charge your car - and that's after your house is done using the solar energy in the first place.
If surplus solar generation falls below this level, some chargers will pause charging, while others can draw a small amount of electricity from the grid to make up the shortfall, meaning your leftover solar energy will still make it into your car.
The amount of energy you generate will depend on factors such as solar panel placement and the number of solar panels installed.

Best solar EV charger with tariff integration: Ohme ePod

Pros | Cons |
|
|
Why we chose it
While the Ohme range might be a bit behind on the solar EV charging race, having only introduced solar power integration to their range of chargers in 2023, the onboard software that manages schedules and charging is second to none.
Using Ohme's Solar Boost mode, drivers can set a time that they want their car to be ready by and the ePod will use any excess energy generated by your solar panels to power your car whilst also using off-peak grid power.
It will also use solar and grid energy together to maximise the use of your solar panels if enabled in the settings.
Ohme is working on a Solar Only mode that will allow you to only charge via your solar panels when there's excess energy available but this is yet to be released at the time of writing.
Still though, with Ohme's excellent software team, we are sure that both the Ohme ePod and its sibling the Ohme Home Pro will be very capable solar EV chargers once the features are fully fledged.
Who it's for
If you want a charger that automatically works out how to get the cheapest charging sessions for your electric car that's also solar compatible then look no further than the Ohme ePod. It's also great for anyone who's looking to get the greenest charge possible, as it even knows whether the grid is using renewable energy or not and can be set to only charge during these times.

Why we chose it
If decadence is what you're after in a solar EV charger and your budget stretches far enough, look no further than the Andersen range (in particular, the A3).
Not only does it come in a practically endless array of finishes and colours but the A3 also includes a cable tidy system that hides the cable when it's not in use, giving you a clean wire-free aesthetic.
When harvesting energy from your solar panels into your electric car, you get access to an array of settings that allow you to adjust how much grid and solar power go into your charging sessions.
Who's it for
Definitely those with deeper pockets. The Andersen A3 is an expensive home charger coming in at around £1374 with installation.
For that cost though drivers get an EV charger that doubles as a work of art and built-in software that works as good as it looks.

Honourable mentions
Here's a few home chargers that didn't make it to our list but thought were worth mentioning.
Easee One

Normally at the top of our lists, the Easee One is a brilliant home EV charger that offers flexibility in more ways than one.
It's got a cable locking feature, so you can choose between having a tethered or untethered unit. It has both WiFi and mobile data for those who have an unstable internet connection in the location they want their charge point mounted and it has swappable faceplates so that you can match your home charger with the colour of your house.
It can also harness solar power, just not natively. To do that, you'll need the Equalizer, a £100 add-on that connects to your home power supply and manages power output. Fortunately, it can be installed after your charger is installed, so you don't have to worry about buying both at once.

Tesla wall connector

There's not many car makers that also make home chargers, of course though Tesla is one of those exceptions.
The wall connector does have very capable solar integrations but they are currently limited to those who have both a Tesla Model S, 3, X or Y and a Tesla Powerwall. That's a tall order and a big commitment towards the Tesla ecosystem just to get charger that's compatible with your solar panels. We've heard however that the solar features of the Tesla Wall Connector are very good however if you're willing to make the commitment.
